Poppy（ポピー）
　《Poppy》は2018年から制作が始まったプロジェクトです。バルト海周辺を舞台とした本作は、私が絶え間なくシャッターを切り続けていた、不安定で混沌とした時期に生まれました。自分を取り巻く環境を撮影することは、生きる道標となり、不確かな日々の手応えを繋ぎ止める方法となりました。そうすることで混沌を制御し、現実と非現実の境界を確かめようとしたのです。

　写真に登場するのは、私が繋がりを感じた人々——友人、家族、恋人、道端で偶然出会った人々です。彼らを撮影することで親密さが生まれ、あたかも家のような自分の居場所を見出した感覚になりました。

　ポピー＝ケシの花は「眠り」「情熱」「死」の象徴として繰り返し現れます。その抽出物が鎮静剤となることから「眠り」を、血のような赤から「死と情熱」を象徴しています。ポピーは「永遠の眠り」の印として墓石に刻まれることもあります。私にとってポピーは、嵐の真っ只中にあるシェルターのような「脆さ」「愛」「安らぎ」を象徴するものなのです。

Theo Elias テオ・エリアス
1985年生まれ。スウェーデン出身。ヴァランド芸術大学、北欧写真学校で教育を受ける。自伝的側面を持つ彼の作品は、多くの場合、数年にわたる長期プロジェクトとして展開される。写真、コラージュ、絵画、テキストを組み合わせた写真集やインスタレーションを制作。

2019年 デビュー作『Smoke』が「Photo London & La Fabrica Dummy Award」を受賞。スウェーデン写真集賞にノミネート。
2021年 2作目『Red / January 2021』が「Lucie Photo Book Prize 2021」にノミネート。
現在ストックホルムを拠点に活動中。

Poppy
 Poppy is a work developed since 2018. Set around the Baltic Sea, it comes from a time of instability
and chaos in which I photographed continuously. Photographing my surroundings became a
direction and a way to hold onto something – to take control and to understand what was real and
what was not.
 The people in the photographs are those I felt connected to – friends, family, lovers, and people I
randomly met on the street. By photographing them I felt close and a sense of belonging – a form of
home.
 The poppy flowers appears as a recurring symbol of sleep, passion, and death. Sleep because the
opium extracted from it is a sedative, and death & passion because of the blood-red color of the
flower. Poppies are also used on tombstones as symbols of eternal sleep. For me, the poppy
represents fragility, love and safety, like a shelter in the middle of a storm.

Theo Elias
 Theo Elias (b. 1985) is a Swedish photographer educated at Valand Academy of Fine Arts and
Nordic School of Photography. His work, which contains a strong autobiographical dimension, is
often long term and stretches over several years. He’s working with photo books and installations in
where he combines photography, collages, painting and text.
 His debut book Smoke was 2019 the winner of Photo London & La Fabrica Dummy Award, and was nominated for the Swedish Photobook Award. His second book Red / January 2021 was nominated for the Lucie Photo Book Prize 2021. He currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
